Ninety-Minute Bigot

“Am I a ninety-minute bigot? Yes. 100%. However, I don’t come in singing bigotry. I know every word to every song, but I don’t ever want that going on to my son.”

With roughly 700,000 Catholics and 1.1 million Protestants populating Scotland, the majority of which living along the central belt, the sectarian divide between the two has been a persistent issue that has led to hatred, prejudice and bigotry. Nowadays, many of these differences and aggressions are presented in a football context, rather than religious, with sectarian slogans and threats appearing in the form of chants, flags and graffiti.

Growing up outside of the area, Aidan McMillan spoke to three generations of his father’s side of the family, both Catholic and Protestant, to learn about growing up in these towns with a mixed family. McMillan combines archive material, portraiture and landscape images, discovering the reality of what living in and around the divide was like for his family, as well as how it has impacted their lives, experiences, and themselves as individuals.
